The American Audubon Society's “Christmas Bird Count” has been running since 1900 — volunteers count all the birds in their region on one day in December. Over 120 years of data now show which species are following the climate north and which are disappearing.

Tip
Learn the twenty most common birds in your region first — then every other one stands out immediately. Try to learn everything at once and you end up recognizing none.
Sit still for twenty minutes and count how many different voices you hear. You need no binoculars for this.
